Before these four Jang Seungs (Wishing Statues) were placed in front of the Palace Inn on October 25, 2002, they traveled from Seoul, Korea. In Seoul, they were placed as a monument at the International Media Center for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Games. Traditionally in Korea, Jang Seungs were carved on the first full moon of the new year to symbolize peace and happiness for everyone. They were placed in front of homes and communities to stand as guides for directions. They were also believed to protect against illness and bad luck. The artist YooSuk Bang carved them from New Zealand spruce trees for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Games not only to bring luck, but to help break the wall of many different races and fill the gap of diverse cultures with love and peace. The Lee Family hopes that these four Jang Seungs placed in front of the Palace Inn serves the same purposes it has traditionally and that it will bring peace and happiness to everyone in the community and for those who are just visiting as well.
